First of all, I will repeat a universal truth: Practice makes perfect! If it has been a while since you last sewed an invisible zipper, start by practicing on scrap fabric. After one or two times, your zippers will be correctly installed!.

When installing invisible zippers, having a zipper that is 5" / 12 cm longer than the opening will make it much easier to get a nice finish.

To practice, cut two rectangles 10 x 5" or 25 x12.5 cm. You need an 8-10" zipper / 20-25 cm and an invisible zipper foot for your sewing machine.

Add strips of interfacing to the pocket openings to stabilize the fabric. (This step is missing in the pictures below, as we have added this after testing).

First, Mark the zipper opening with notches and pins, and you sew the seam into which the zipper is installed. Baste only in between the notches.

Press the seam. Open the zipper and press the zipper tape and the coil open.

Place the zipper face down aligned on top of the seam with an even amount of the extra zipper length on both sides of the notches.

Pin and hand baste the zipper to the seam allowance (Not the body).

Open the basted seam and open the zipper. Push the zipper head all the way to the end of the zipper tape. Use your invisible zipper foot. Flip the body to one side and sew the zipper to first one side then the other side of the opening. The invisible zipper foot has a groove into which the zipper coil fits. It pushes the zipper down, and you will be able to sew right in the grove of the zipper.

Close the zipper. Use a pair of tweezers to grip the zipper head while pulling it through to the opening. Close the zipper, and hand stitch stopping stitches at the top and bottom of the opening. You can cut away the extra zipper coil, but you don't have to!
